GeoBaseMap

Enhancing MapInfo for the Technical User

GeoBasemap is more than a set of graphical tools. It is a mapping system that helps you maintain and enhance your valuable data, produce quality scaled maps, and analyse data relationships.

Features of GeoBasemap Mapping System

  • Standardize Map Presentation
GeoBasemap maintains a database code for each map object and an associated display style. Like items (such as all towns, roads, railways and special technical features) look the same on every map. And you can control which layers the various classes of graphical object are drawn on.
It becomes easier to conform to Corporate or Industry mapping standards and a single change to the central style definition file leads to a simple update of the associated maps.
  • Manage your valuable data
GeoBasemap embeds description, abstract and data source information into MapInfo tables. This metadata together with full file pathnames is available through the GeoBasemap layer control function. It becomes much easier to keep track of your data files and keep notes of your edits. And you can document your displays with GeoBasemap "list metadata" function.
  • Support GIS Analysis
GIS systems provide special spatial analysis tools. For example it is possible to query MapInfo for locations where igneous rocks of a given age range intrude favourable sediments or where a soil type occurs in a particular rainfall belt. Advanced analysis functions require 'GIS ready' data, that means no gaps or overlaps between abutting map regions and appropriate tagging of map objects. GeoBasemap solves the common line problem (see below). GeoBasemap Drawing and Style tools automatically add your database codes.
  • Common Boundary Lines
With GeoBasemap you draw the line segments and incorporate nodes from those segments into region definitions. Important GeoBasemap modules are the Line Intersection tool, the Drawing and Style tools and the GIS Boundary tool that automatically assigns the style code and manages the output tables.
  • Maintain Data Integrity
Graphical editing of sample locations can result in a mismatch between map locations and underlying database coordinates. The GeoBasemap Table Update tool keeps your database up to date.
  • Special Symbols
We have added a comprehensive geological symbol set (Over 100 items including bedding, jointing, foliation etc.) as well as north arrows and other common map features. These can be rotated to a specified strike or dip direction and include appropriate annotation (such as dip angle or mining shaft name. Any extra symbols you may need can be added.
  • Scaled Text
With GeoBasemap you specify the size that each text style will be drawn on the final scaled map. That means more consistent maps, as text size is no longer a function of your current graphics screen view.
  • Graticules and Plot Ancillaries
The GeoBasemap Graticule module draws and annotated geographic reference grid in any MapInfo coordinate system. The GeoBasemap Special Symbols module lets you orientate north arrows for the various references (eg true and magnetic north). An enhanced scale bar generation tool has been added.
  • Produce Quality Maps to Scale
GeoBasemap standardizes map displays and automates production of map legends. The GeoBasemap style codes associated with visible objects identify the item to be included in the map legend. The Plotting module greatly simplifies creation of quality scaled output.

GeoBasemap Display Tools

GeoBasemap Display Tools is a companion product to the GeoBasemap Mapping System.

The Graticule module generates evenly spaced grids of easting and northing or latitude and longitude lines. Graticules are created in any MapInfo map projection. You can show multiple map grids as well as latitude and longitude lines on the same map.

The Vector Patterns module fills MapInfo regions with cross hatching (69 patterns to choose from including the standard geological patterns). These 'transparent' vector patterns are ideal for posting onto raster images or other MapInfo region fill patterns. And you can control the density of hatching so patterns look good at plot scale and not just on the graphics screen.

The Multiple thematics module extends the functionality of MapInfo thematics by displaying up to four independently scaled numeric items with symbols both size and colour coded according to the underlying data values. Display definitions are automatically saved as reusable profiles and the thematic displays are themselves saved to their own permanent table.

GeoBasemap Images + - Your Point and Click data management solution

Images + is a GIS extension of MapInfo developed by Exa-Min. With Images + your GIS map becomes a graphical pointer to all sorts of external data sets. It associates images, maps, and third party data files, such as Word and Excel documents, with MapInfo Objects.

Features and Practical Uses of Images + include

  • Ability to open third party applications from a MapInfo Session
  • Catalogue and manage your Data files with multiple index hierarchies providing ready access to the same data sets
  • Associate your MapInfo tables into named maps
  • Add descriptions (metadata) to MapInfo maps and third party data files
  • Spatially enable your in house software
  • Add annotation layers and hot spots to your digital images
  • Reference your images geographically
